Following the Grenelle de l'Environnement findings which have encouraged us all to use environmentally-friendly production methods, to conserve biodiversity and natural resources, the interprofessional body decided to include a Sustainable Viticulture programme to the certification scheme.
Launched in 2001, this Sustainable Viticulture programme has clearly defined objectives.
The Comité Champagne, which owns the certification scheme, offers technical specifications which can found on its website www.champagne.fr
Controlling the use of chemical inputs with the aim of protecting public health and the environment
Conserving and promoting the terroir, biodiversity and wine-growing regions
Managing water resources, effluents, by-products and waste in a responsible way
Reducing the industry's energy dependency and carbon footprint
The standard includes 123 different requirements within 8 categories. It is a comprehensive and demanding scheme which covers chemical inputs, biodiversity, the environment, water and waste management, as well as energy consumption.
The Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne certification is reserved for all wine producers who belong to the AOC Champagne region. It is defined in line with specific characteristics of the Champagne vineyards while inspired by the European directives and French requirements stemming from the Grenelle de l'Environnement.
SVC certification is voluntary. Producers wishing to participate in the scheme can do so on an individual or joint basis.
This standard includes 63 different requirements within 8 categories.
The Sustainable Viticulture Qualification in Champagne Projects and Services is reserved for all wine producers in the Champagne region.
This certification scheme is based on the approval cycle for plant protection products, which is compulsory for companies that use plant protection products within their business. Depending on the type of cycle the company is involved in, here are two coupling options:
A "Sustainable Viticulture Champagne" logo is given by the Comité Champagne to all accredited Champagne producers. This logo and the corresponding charter will help you to highlight your certification and demonstrate your commitment to the environment.
SOCOFRET, a certifying body authorised by the Comité Champagne, offers an efficient way of working, with qualified auditors performing the relevant assessments based on the scheme you have chosen.
SOCOFRET is the only organisation offering this certification and is based in the Marne.
